Jack Layton sends Peter Tabuns to debate for him. Peter Tabuns is promptly ejected from the debate hall.

Just a quick run-down of what happened last night at the Toronto-Danforth All Candidates Debate:

Despite assurances from his campaign that Jack would be there, Jack was in Comox, British Columbia.  It marked the second time he went to the riding of Vancouver Island North, which means that he has been to that riding MORE OFTEN THAN HIS OWN.  Talk about taking your voters for granted.

Anyway, in his place, Jack Layton sent Peter Tabuns to debate for him (though he didn’t tell the other candidates that this was happening, or the local residents there to hear Jack debate).  People in the audience started shouting, and the moderator decided to put it to a vote.  Get this: the audience decided to send Peter Tabuns packing.  I’m glad the audience stood up to the NDP’s arrogance.  If Jack Layton seriously wants our votes, he’s going to have to do a lot better than this.

Here’s my pre-debate take:

And my post-debate wrap-up:

  1. Gabe, you are a Liberal who has likely never voted for the NDP in your short voting life:

this site shows you are the “recruiter” for UofT Liberals:

    http://www.uoftliberals.com/exec.html

this site of yours describes you as a “campaign worker for deborah coyne” who ran against jack in 2006:

how is it possible for you to claim you have “always voted NDP” when you are a diehard Liberal and worked against Jack in the last federal election.

you sir are seriously misrepresenting yourself to a public that may not know better.

  2. this site has been created by Liberals to smear an opponent, period.

Never once have I denied my partisan affiliation. Though I may be a member of one Party, this site has appeal to anyone in Toronto-Danforth who doesn’t feel represented by Jack Layton. It’s for anyone who is offended by the fact that Jack Layton takes their vote for granted, and doesn’t even have the decency to show up for debate that he invited his constituents to.

As for your last point regarding Deborah’s campaign — I didn’t work for her when she ran here in Toronto-Danforth. I began volunteering for her in 2007.

I have only ever voted for the NDP in federal elections — sorry, NDP people, but it’s true. I think it’s interesting that the only negative responses to this site that I have been receiving are from people accusing me of lying about personal details of my life and my beliefs.

Also — am I supposed to be impressed/shocked that you figured out how to Google me?

  4. well gabe, then you would know that the organisers, all of them, had agreed to the format and for Tabuns as a stand in, BEFORE the debate.

your website here is a joke.

jack is in the riding as much as a federal MP, expected to be in Ottawa, can be, and you know that.

as well, it is a long standing tradition that Leaders of national parties are afforded the courtesy of a stand in for local riding events if their national tour prevents them from attending. as a political science student you should be well aware of this.

Harper and Dion are afforded the same courtesy. In fact, just last week on CBC radio 1, they announced that Dion would be appearing to answer questions on the call in, and Bob Rae appeared instead, and the host was unaware of the switch. when asked about it, Bob replied….we are all on the same team so it doesn’t matter who appears.

Jack will be here tomorrow if you’d care to speak with him personally about it.

i think you’re full of it buddy and this site says more about your juvenile shenanigans that it does about Jack’s integrity.

BTW, your Liberal candidate, Andrew Lang supports both the Big Box on Eastern and the Portlands Energy Centre, both opposed by almost all of the community and the City.

    way to support the community.

  5. it was agreed upon by the organisers Peter would stand in for Jack. that means all the candidates knew beforehand too and agreed to it.
